I like to give edible presents for Christmas, like homemade eggnog and cranberry compote. The eggnog recipe is from a friend's mother and is best made 2 weeks in advance, so it can mature a little before use. The compote was my own invention. I made it a few years ago for myself, since cranberries are so healthy and it was the first time I saw them fresh in a supermarket here in Vienna. To balance the tartness of the berries I threw in some pears I had lying around at home - the perfect addition, since also I did not use any sugar and just a little bit of honey. Then my parents came to visit and the two jars of compote I had left were gone in a minute... thus the idea to make and give it as a present for Christmas! My favorite part is when the cranberries plop in the hot liquid, such a satisfying noise :) oh, and the decorating of the labels and jars, of course!
